Chapter Ten
Sebastian
âEverything was delicious.â Evan stood up, gathering my plate with his.
After our emotional conversation, we switched gears, enjoying our food and having traditional-date chat.
âYou donât have to clean up.â I stood, reaching out for the dishes. âYouâre my guest.â
âTrue.â He pulled the plates closer to himself. âBut also, I kind of do.â
âHowâs that?â I reached for the butter dish and salad dressing. He might be all demanding on clearing the table, but the least I could do was put away the refrigerated items.
âDonât you remember?â
I looked at him, waiting for him to fill in the rest because I hadnât a clue.
âYou cook, I clean. Itâs the rule.â
Iâd forgotten about that completely. Whoever cooked got to sit back and relax after the meal. âI suppose I should have been messier,â I teased.
âHa ha.â Evan eyed the dressing, and I set it back down. He was serious. âDid you want dessert now, or did you want to wait?â
âWhich dessert are we talking about?â After that kiss, all I could think about was him in my mouth, his hands balled in fists at his side as he tried not to take over. That was the bestâwhen he was so turned on, it was almost too muchâknowing I did that.
âProbably the cannolis.â He let out a small sigh.
He was right. Weâd had a pleasant dinner, getting caught up with all the things in our lives. Except for the ones we needed to talk about. Weâd kept the conversation strictly date-like. We talked about his employees. I described my bosses. He mentioned how he was considering getting a kitten. I told him how I was thinking about buying a new recliner. Just the average, everyday things.
But now it was time to discuss the important thingsâto dig a little deeper.
Ruth had more than one presentation about how important it was to negotiate. And I never doubted that. But it wasnât until Evan came back into my life I saw how truly important that was.
We would figure things outâwe were both all in. It was just a matter of what it would look like.
He took the plates into the kitchen, and I got up and grabbed my folder.
Yes, I had a folderâone that was probably going to earn me a little giggle from Evan. Goodness, Iâd chuckled at myself for creating it. But it was important to remember all the things in it and, when I was close to him, my brain tended to focus on his smile or the tilt of his head instead of the things I needed to say.
When I got back to the table, he already had it completely cleared. I set the folder in front of me and waited for him to return.
Sure enough, he broke out into laughter.
âWill there be a test on this eveningâs presentation?â he teased, holding his hand out for me. âLetâs go into the living roomâunless you plan for me to take notes.â
âNo test or notes today. I made you copies.â I sat on the couch. âAlthough it sort of feels like a test for both of us,â I confessed.
